This quote: "Everything I do with my kids is in service of their future executive function." <-- that is a fantastic way of thinking. My 14-year-old is really good at independence, etc., we're working on the younger one. :) I really enjoyed this share!

Thank you for sharing! Also here to ask about teaching kids independence and executive function. Would love tips on how to start! (Kids are 5 and 2.5)

I wanna be like you when I grow up

Seriously, this is what I aspire to, and often fall short of doing.

‘Everything I do with my kids is in service of their future executive function.‘ This is gold! I know I do too much for my 10 year old daughter, but framing it this way really helps me see the value in her owning things. Thank you for your work Kelly and that you to the Mom that shared this wisdom ❤️

Love this--thank you for sharing! We are also working on my teen and tween's executive functions so would love for readers to share tips on getting them there. The idea to set time limits for each task is interesting! Also letting them do their own laundry (I need to get on that!)

As someone who started doing their laundry, very young, I can tell you the reason that I did it is because my mother just kept putting everything away in the wrong place and I got so annoyed. I started doing it myself. 🤣

Brilliant! Taking notes 📝 😆

I went to an Executive Function workshop where the book Smart But Scattered was recommended. I got a used copy on Biblio for regular reference. It has questionnaires to discover areas of strength and weakness and checklists etc to help build skills!

I'm super impressed with her ability to get 12k steps a day!

Quick question for the OP, if she does not mind? How does your 12-yr-old track the assigned timed tasks? A timer? Watch? I welcome tips! In similar boat with a newly 11-yr-old daughter. :)

Had the same question, which is complicated by the fact that I don’t want her to have devices in her room in the evening or the morning 😆. A phone or apple watch would be the easy option

My daughter and her friends are really into Shark watches- basically old school digital watches with cute straps. They have a timer function, which would help with keeping internet linked devices out of private spaces.
